讲座时间:20161018日(周二)上午10:00-11:30

讲座地点:中关村校区研究生楼308教室

讲座题目:The changing electrical power system and why the world needs you!

主讲人:Dr Evan Franklin, The Australian National University, Canberra

Dr Evan Franklin is a senior lecturer and research fellow in the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University, Canberra. Evan has authored over 70 journal papers, conference papers and patents on silicon solar cells, and on solar photovoltaic systems and their integration into the electric power system. With a wealth of experience teaching into electrical engineering and renewable energy engineering at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, Evan brings unique insights from his experiences working in industry and from his many current and past industrially sponsored research projects. His current research interests include the development of processes suitable for industrial photovoltaic manufacturing of high efficiency solar cells, the integration of renewable energy generation into the power system and the role of energy storage in future energy systems. Evan is a strong advocate for renewable energy and related technologies, engaging with community, industry and government to promote the crucial role they must play in supporting the transition to a clean energy system.

讲座大纲:

Global demand for energy continues to grow at a rate of over 2% per annum. The largest fraction of demand is met by energy supplied in the form of electricity, over two-thirds of which is derived from burning fossil fuels. With the need to address human-induced climate change now established as being crucial for the long-term sustainability of life as we know it on our planet, renewable energy is the key to a transition to clean energy driven growth. In 2016, for the first time ever, we will see the installation of new renewable energy generators (dominated by solar and wind) making up over 50% of the world’s new generation capacity. This trend will continue for decades to come, facilitated by ongoing technological innovations and highly-skilled and motivated engineers.

This seminar will look at the various technical challenges associated with transitioning our electrical supply system to a renewables based system, and the exciting opportunities they bring. The presentation will include an overview of the latest research and developments in the field of solar and wind generation, and in the emerging topic of integration of renewables into the electricity grid. Particular attention will be paid to the research and educational activities currently being undertaken in these areas at the Australian National University. The seminar will then propose an inescapable fact: the world needs you!  A successful transition to a renewables based energy sector simply cannot be done without you - the next generation of engineers, technologists, software developers and entrepreneurs. Finally, the seminar will conclude with an overview of study and life at the world-leading Australian National University in Canberra, and will review in particular the renewable energy educational offerings and opportunities at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. There will be time for questions and discussions at the end of the seminar.
